The answer is “Randoselu”.
This is a kind of Japanese schoolbag for elementary school pupils.
RANSELs (valises in Dutch), the origin of “Randoselu”, were imported from the Netherlands for soldiers at first. In the middle of the Meiji era (1868-1912), Itou Hirohumi, the first Japanese prime minister, gave it to the crown prince (he became Taisho Emperor years later), when he entered the Gakusyu-in (state educational school) elementary course. He might have used it in elementary course, and other students might have liked it, and started to use “Randoselus”.
This is about 35 centimeters high when shut, and about 85 centimeters high when open, and about 30 centimeters wide and about 20 centimeters deep. This light type is about 1 kilogram when it’s empty. Their colors used to be mainly red or black. Boys used to prefer using black ones, and girls used to like to use red ones. But now there are so many colors for a “Randoselu”, for example, light blue, pink, and so on. They were usually made of cowhide. But lately, they are made of lighter artificial leather called Clarino. I used to use a heavier one when I was a pupil. Surprisingly, some of “Randoselus” are covered with fur, for example, zebra, crest of chicken, etc, and some are even made of gold. They have a metal hook to hang something. We usually hang small bags on them. We carry napkins and masks for school lunch in the bags.
After graduation, we don’t use “Randoselus” in junior high school and senior high school. We have to store them at home, and they’re too big for us to store at home as a memorabilia, and but they have so many memories that we can’t give them up easily. Some have their own “Randoselus” miniaturized by a special craftsqman. I also did so and have displayed it in my room.
