When we use it, we put our legs inside, and then our legs get warm and the whole body becomes warm. It way is very comfortable for Japanese people because the kotatsu is source of heat covered with a quilt that efficient for heat and the Japanese traditional house had a lot of gap which wasn’t suitable for general heating. And in those days Japan had not enough fuel for heat. It is now the kotatsu have an electric heater but beginning it was put a charcoal burner in the pit. A charcoal could keep burning for a long time and stability heat and had a good point of didn’t go out smoke. However it had danger to poisoning that when it burning, it made go out the carbon monoxide. So the kotatsu with safety and simple electric heater become appealed.

The kotatsu has the other sort that in those days people used a sunken kotatsu. They could warm with their legs stretched as if they sat on a chair they used to put the table cover a pit under the floor. It’ｓ nice but normal kotatsu have been more popular because it can’t move.

This is used only during winter but also in summer this is used as a low table without a quilt, so this is useful for all seasons.

A few people can use this at the same time, providing an opportunity for families to communicate. And we can change the quilts and enjoy various patterns.
