WHAT IS IWCAT ?

IWCAT is the International Workshop of Ceramic Art in Tokoname. We are a non-profit volunteer group of Tokoname citizens. Tokoname is a city with a rich history of pottery and ceramics production going back 900 years.
This is the 16th time we have held the International Workshop of Ceramic Art in Tokoname. Our purpose is to share our city's heritage, exchange ideas and work together to improve techniques while participating in various forms of the ceramic arts.
The program has been a success since it was initially established in 1985. We strongly believe that the event is a valuable opportunity to develop individual skills and techniques.
Furthermore, it offers the opportunity to experience daily life with a Japanese family for the period of the workshop.
Come and join us to improve your skills, experience our culture and learn about our people !

WORKSHOP FOR 2000

The history of ceramics as " living utensils " is an ancient concept. Pottery and ceramics are implements of daily life that bridge the gap between past traditions, ancient techniques and contemporary life, modern needs. Tokoname is the site of the Tokoname kiln, one of the Six Ancient Kiln sites of Japan! Living and working in Tokoname is a continuation of the vital, exciting history of ceramics.

Duration : July 22 (Sat.) through August 27(Sun.), 2000

Program Outline : Opening ceremony, Orientation, Welcome party, Visiting local pottery studios, Demonstrations, Studio work, Glazing, Loading, Firing and unloading kilns, Exchange session, Field trip, Exhibitions, Farewell party, Closing ceremony.

Materials and Kilns :
Clay : Tokoname clay, Seto clay, Mino clay, Shigaraki clay, etc.
Glaze : Ash glaze, Clear glaze, Celadon glaze, Iron glaze, Copper glaze, etc.
Kiln : Wood kiln, Gas Kiln, Electric kiln, etc.
*With your approval, we'll keep some of the work you produced as part of our permanent collection.

HOMESTAY (Host Family System)

The IWCAT program exists with the cooperation and support of the citizens of Tokoname. The "Host family" system works very well and has enabled many Tokoname families over the years to participate in the program. Living with and being part of a Japanese family for the duration of the workshop allows the workshop participant to experience first hand Japanese culture and daily family life in Japan. All the host families are volunteers and are essential to the continuing success of IWCAT, without them we could not operate the program. To ensure a more enriching experience participants are encouraged to spend time after working in the studio relaxing with and getting to know their host families.
*We'd like you to commute to the workshop by bicycle.

OUR CITY, Tokoname

TOKONAME is located roughly in the heart of Japan, about three hours by train from Tokyo. The population of the city is over 52,000 and the majority of citizens work in the ceramics industry. The city is blessed with beautiful natural surroundings, low green hills in the east and Ise Bay in the west. Although daytime in the summer is very hot and humid, nights are slightly more bearable.

QUALIFICATIONS

IWCAT is open for any makers of ceramics of every level. However because each participant will stay in the home of one of our host families during the time of the workshop, IWCAT is open only to those who would enjoy this unique opportunity. Because the response in previous years has been so enthusiastic, we have had to select from the many good applicants. The maximum number of participants for IWCAT2000 is 18. The official languages are English and Japanese.
