Full Moon Festival on the Fifteen
Night is held in the Hakusan Shrine at the top of Mt.
Ohyama in the west community on the fifteen night of
August, 15, old style. The festival is said for "Good
fishing and harvest" that has been transmitted from
the end of Edo era, and there was once an eve on the
previous night. In the eve, people used to march and
go up the approach nearly to a torii (archway), with
beating a drum. Next morning they went through the torii
and beat the drum again in front of the shrine. Then
they threw rice cakes and distributed red rice into
visitors, and the place was alive with light - hearted
merry-makers all day. However, recently, depopulation
and aging have been in progress in the west community,
so the eve has not been held since 25 years ago. The
number of drummers has gradually decreased and women
have taken the place of men to practice it now. |
