| This is a festival
for praying good fishing and harvest held in the middle
of October. The origin is obscure, it is however said
this started from the end of the Edo era and ended at
the beginning of the Meiji era. The Shinmei Shrine was
originally in the westward but transferred and entrusted
as a joint shrine in the Hakken Shrine in the eastward,
so the festivals have jointly been celebrated. Beating
drums both in the east and west wards children parade
the streets shouldering a portable shrine. The festival
continues for two days\\starting from an eve(the previous
night) and ending in a regular main festival(the day).
During the festival the whole island is caught up in
the festival. In old days it was fairly lavishly held
suitable for the name "Grand Festival", however, as
time goes by, it tends to get smaller. To pass on traditions
of the festival such as the drum beating to the next
generation, we have begun the activity to preserve them
carefully. |

The origin of the drum beating
The body of the drum in the eastward
was made of just one cherry tree and has an inestimable
value. It is said to be handed over from the Honda family
of the Nishio clan. |
